Social Security Tax Limits in 2026: Quick Explainer

In 2026, the most you’ll pay in Social Security tax depends on how much you earn and whether you’re an employee or self‑employed.

The key number is the Social Security wage base: $184,500.

The big numbers at a glance

Item 2026 Value
Social Security wage base (max taxable earnings) $184,500
Employee Social Security tax rate 6.2%
Employer Social Security tax rate 6.2%
Max employee Social Security tax $11,439
Max employer Social Security tax $11,439
Self‑employed Social Security rate (both halves) 12.4%
Max self‑employed Social Security tax $22,878
Medicare tax rate (employee + employer) 1.45% each (no cap)
Self‑employed Medicare rate 2.9% (no cap)

How it works for employees

  • You pay 6.2% of your wages in Social Security tax, but only on the first $184,500 you earn in 2026.

  • Your employer matches that with another 6.2%.

  • If you earn $184,500 or more, you hit the maximum: $11,439 in Social Security tax for the year.

  • If you earn less, you just pay 6.2% of your total wages. Example: $50,000 in wages → $3,100 in Social Security tax.

Quick examples for employees

Annual wages Social Security tax (6.2%)
$40,000 $2,480
$75,000 $4,650
$100,000 $6,200
$184,500+ $11,439 (maximum)

Once your year‑to‑date wages reach $184,500, your employer should stop withholding Social Security tax for the rest of the year.

How it works if you’re self‑employed

Self‑employed workers pay both the employee and employer shares:

  • 12.4% for Social Security on the first $184,500 of net self‑employment earnings.

  • That means a maximum Social Security tax of $22,878 in 2026.

  • You also pay 2.9% for Medicare on (almost) all net earnings, with no cap.

You can usually deduct the “employer half” of your self‑employment tax when calculating your income tax, which lowers your taxable income but not the Social Security tax itself.

What about Medicare?

The wage base cap does not apply to Medicare:

  • Employees: 1.45% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on high incomes (Additional Medicare Tax).

  • Employers: match the 1.45%.

  • Self‑employed: 2.9% on net earnings, plus the 0.9% surtax if you’re above the threshold.

One more thing: Multiple Jobs

If you work for more than one employer, each one may withhold Social Security tax as if it’s your only job.

That can cause your total withholding to go over $11,439. If that happens, you can usually claim the excess as a credit when you file your federal tax return.

Bottom Line

  • Wage base (2026): $184,500

  • Max employee tax: $11,439

  • Max employer match: $11,439

  • Max self‑employed Social Security tax: $22,878

Everything above $184,500 is still subject to Medicare tax, but not to Social Security tax.
